White-Tail Deer

If you're a white-tail deer hunter, and you don't have dreams about bagging the "big one", than I can only think two things about you. One, you have already bagged the "big one". If you haven't and don't want to, than I believe you shouldn't be out there in the woods hunting. If you don't take hunting somewhat seriously, than don't even take it up. Don't get me wrong, I believe everyone should have fun hunting, but all the same, take it seriously. If you don't take your hunting seriously, than someone could get hurt.

There are different times of deer hunting for the different times of the hunting season. The three main seasons are the pre-rutting season, rutting season, and post-rutting season. The activities change during each one of the different seasons. Bowhunting is usually taking place during the pre-rut season. This is the time when most of the rubs are found. The bucks are trying to rub the velvet off their antlers. A rub usually consists of a tree scraped of its bark. I have seen smaller trees rubbed up to ten feet high. The bucks bend the trees over while they rub.

The next type of deer season is the rutting season. This is the time when the deer mate. Most gun seasons take place during the peak of the rut. Many people go out before the rut, not realizing the deer habits alter drastically during the rut, scout for deer, set up their stands, and prepare the area for the hunt. The only problem is when the deer alter their habits, the stands are useless because they weren't set up for the deer during the rut. The best method I've found to go after the deer is to scout out the area before hand, find where the deer travel and live, and then after the rut starts, scout a little more and adjust to the new traveling patterns of the deer.

The last season is the post-rutting season. Deer return to some of the same habits as in the pre-rut, but they also start looking toward a place to bed down for the winter. Scout out along your old deer trails. The deer may resort back to their old routes.

If you're like me, then you've never seen a scrape before you went hunting. I had trouble finding out what a scrape looked like. I went hunting with my father, and he showed me a scrape. A scrape is exactly what it sounds like. It a patch of ground scraped down to the dirt by a buck. A doe comes along and urinates in it. If the scrape is wet, that means it is a freshly used scrape. A doe is nearby, or has just passed through. A buck will likely be comming through soon to see if his scrape has attracted a doe. If you do see a scrape, don't go rushing into the middle of it. You will disrupt the entire scent and the deer will probably never return. Usually, with a scrape, nearby is a lick-stick. This is where all the deer that pass through lick the stick. It is usually bend at a forty-five degree angle.

Remember, deer can think. Unless they are used to humans coming through the area and disturbing them, they will change their habits to avoid the area in which they were spooked. Deer have been known to keep away from an area of a missed shot for weeks. Remember the deer can think, deduce and remember occurences for weeks. Be very careful while scouting for deer to make absolutely certain not to spook the deer as they might change their entire habits and not return to the entire area. Good luck with you scouting and hunting.
